Putin announced a ceasefire during the celebration of the 80th anniversary of Victory Day

Vladimir Putin has announced a ceasefire in Ukraine to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War. “From midnight from May 7 to 8 to midnight from May 10 to 11, the Russian side declares a truce. For this period, all hostilities are stopped,” the Kremlin said on its website.

The message notes that the decision was made “for humanitarian reasons” and the Ukrainian side should “follow this example.” In case the ceasefire is violated, the Russian armed forces “will give an adequate and effective response,” the Kremlin warned. The statement also emphasized that Russia was ready for peace talks “without preconditions.” However, they should be “aimed at eliminating the root causes of the military conflict in Ukraine”.
