European leaders have reacted sharply to the public conflict between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump that took place at the White House on 28 February. Thus, French President Emmanuel Macron, who is on a visit to Portugal, emphasized, commenting on the incident, that the West’s support for Ukraine was and remains the right step.
“Russia is the aggressor, Ukraine is the victim of aggression. I am convinced that we did the right thing three years ago in helping Kyiv and imposing sanctions against Moscow, and we must continue to do so. We are the United States, the Europeans, the Canadians, the Japanese and many others. We owe thanks to those who helped and respect to those who have been fighting since the beginning. They are defending not only their dignity, their independence and their children, but also the security of the whole of Europe,” Macron said (quoted by Reuters). He added that such “simple truths” are important to remember.
Johann Wadepoel, deputy leader of the Christian Democratic Union (the party of future Chancellor Friedrich Merz), was also shocked by the incident. “The footage from the White House is shocking. Is it possible to stab the president of a country that has been subjected to aggression in the back? Free Europe will not betray Ukraine!” – he wrote in X.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has expressed support for Kyiv. “Ukraine, Spain is on your side,” he stated.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk supported Zelenskyy. “Dear Volodymyr Zelenskyy, dear Ukrainian friends! You are not alone!” – he wrote in X.
