Four EU countries refuse to support 20 billion euro aid package for Ukraine

Italy, Portugal and Spain have expressed disagreement with the EU’s proposal to allocate the largest military aid package to Ukraine worth 20bn euros. This was reported by Politico citing diplomatic sources. Hungary also opposed the initiative, which was announced earlier by the country’s Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó.

According to Politico, Italy, Portugal and Spain insist on finding alternative ways to finance military aid, such as issuing special Eurobonds or excluding defense spending when calculating the deficit of national budgets. France and Germany are also delaying the decision-making process, the two European diplomats said. In addition, according to the newspaper’s interlocutors, there is growing discontent in the EU due to “the lack of justice and solidarity among the member states supporting Ukraine”.
