The US proposal to hold elections in Ukraine by the end of the year in case of a ceasefire is a failed plan if Washington does not envision doing anything else for sustainable peace, the Ukrainian president’s communications adviser, Dmytro Lytvyn, has said.
“Moscow continues to increase production of missiles and ammunition, find new ways to circumvent sanctions and make money from oil. And it is clear that all these weapons are not created with respect for democratic neighbors,” Lytvyn said. He recalled the words of US President Donald Trump, who spoke about the possibility of putting pressure on Vladimir Putin, and called on Washington to move to work on a “concrete plan to end the war and ensure lasting peace.”
Prior to that, the US President’s special envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, said that Washington wants presidential and parliamentary elections to be held in Ukraine before the end of the year. “In most democracies, elections are held in times of war. I think it’s important that they do. I think it’s good for democracy. That’s the beauty of a robust democracy, when you have more than one person potentially running for office,” Kellogg said. According to Reuters’ sources, Trump’s team believes there should be a presidential election in Ukraine, the winner of which would be able to dialog with Russia over a long-term peace deal.
