Security guarantees for Kyiv that can stop Russia’s invasion will only be effective if they are provided by the United States, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. He added that he hopes to meet with US President-elect Donald Trump immediately after his inauguration.
“I think on January 25 or another day we sit down [for talks] first of all with Trump. We negotiate with him how we can stop [the war], stop Putin,” Zelenskyy said during an interview with U.S. blogger Lex Fridman, who asked about a possible meeting with Trump and Vladimir Putin to sign a peace treaty. The three-hour recording of the conversation was published on Youtube on Sunday, January 5.
Zelenskyy emphasized that the Russian leader is not interested in serious negotiations on ending the war. According to the Ukrainian president, Putin can only be stopped by force and he should be “forced” to stop invading Ukraine.
