A court in Lithuania has arrested an 82-year-old member of an opposition party on charges of spying in favor of Russia, said Arturas Urbialis, a spokesman for the Prosecutor General’s Office.
“He has dual citizenship – Lithuania and Russia, and is a member of the Lithuanian Christian Democrats party and the Union of Lithuanian Exiles and Political Prisoners,” LRT quoted Urbialis as saying.
According to Urbialis, the figure is suspected of having collected information for the Russian Main Intelligence Directorate since 2018. He passed on data about Lithuanian political parties, the country’s defense capabilities, and people deported to Russia during the Soviet occupation. The defendant himself was also deported to Russia with his parents in the 1940s during the Soviet occupation.
