US threatens Georgian authorities with sanctions over crackdown on protests

The US is ready to impose sanctions against the Georgian authorities over “brutal and unjustified violence” against protesters against the suspension of the country’s EU accession talks, State Department chief Anthony Blinken said in a statement.

“The United States stands in solidarity with the people of Georgia and their democratic aspirations. Those who undermine democratic processes or institutions in Georgia, including those who suppress the right of Georgian citizens to freedom of peaceful assembly and expression, will be held accountable,” Blinken said.

He called on the ruling Georgian Dream party to stop repression, detentions and violence against citizens, as well as to release all those detained at the rallies. Prior to that, amid protests in Georgia, the US announced its intention to review bilateral relations with Tbilisi. At the same time, Washington had previously imposed sanctions against Georgia. They included members of the Georgian Dream party, members of parliament, law enforcers and those responsible for the adoption of the law on “foreign agents”.
