EU considers Alexei Gorinov’s trial a “farce”

“This judicial farce once again emphasizes Russia’s constant efforts to suppress freedom of speech and peaceful dissent,” EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said in a statement.

Emphasizing that the court decision is politically motivated and unacceptable, the head of European diplomacy called on the Russian authorities to stop repression and “immediately and unconditionally” release Alexei Gorinov and other political prisoners in Russia.

Borrell’s statement indicated that Gorinov has been detained without any grounds since April 2022 for his public anti-war stance. “He is subjected to inhumane treatment in prison and is denied necessary medical care despite his severe lung disease. This leads to further deterioration of his health and amounts to torture,” the EU high representative emphasized.

On the eve, the 2nd Western District Military Court in Vladimir sentenced Alexei Gorinov, a former deputy of Moscow’s Krasnoselsky municipal district, who was sentenced to seven years in a general regime colony in 2022, to another three years in a strict regime colony in a new case of “justification of terrorism.”
