EU intends to expand training of AFU fighters for defense against invasion

The EU is going to provide training for an additional number of Ukrainian military personnel. The defense ministers of the European bloc’s member states plan to agree on the specific figure at a meeting in Brussels on Friday, August 30, EU High Representative for Security and Foreign Policy Josep Borrell said.

According to Borrel, the preliminary goal of the EU training mission was to train 60,000 military personnel, but this figure will be increased, the Ukrainian service of Radio Liberty reported.

At the current meeting, the ministers also plan to discuss the transfer of some EU training activities to the territory of Ukraine. Swedish Defense Minister Pal Johnson said that he did not rule out such a possibility, but added that EU unity was needed in this issue, besides, “military and political aspects” should be taken into account.

The Ukrainian military is now undergoing training in Germany and Poland – as part of efforts by Western allies to help Ukraine defend itself against a Russian invasion. The training mission began in November 2022. According to the EU leadership as of May this year, 52,000 Ukrainian soldiers have received training.
