French authorities have extended the detention of Telegram founder Pavel Durov, AFP reports. The initial period of detention for questioning can last up to 96 hours. At its end, a judge can decide to release him, or press charges and extend his detention.
AFP’s source said France’s justice ministry (OFMIN) had issued an arrest warrant for Durov as part of a preliminary investigation into crimes including fraud, drug trafficking, cyberbullying, organized crime and terrorist propaganda. Durov is accused of failing to take measures to stop the criminal use of his platform.
Telegram said Durov has nothing to hide and travels frequently in Europe. “Telegram complies with EU laws, including the Digital Services Act, its moderation is in line with industry standards,” Telegram added. – “It is absurd to claim that the platform or its owner is responsible for abuse on the platform.”
