Pentagon announces two $1.7 billion military aid packages for Ukraine

Ukraine will receive two military aid packages from the USA. The first one will amount to $200m, which will be used to provide Kyiv with weapons from the US arsenals. The second, worth $1.5 billion, will be allocated within the framework of the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI), the Pentagon said.

The largest package will include shells for NASAMS surface-to-air missile systems and HIMARS multiple rocket launchers, short- and medium-range ammunition for air defense, RIM-7 anti-aircraft missiles and electronic warfare equipment. Ukraine will also receive Javelin and AT-4 anti-tank systems, optically guided missiles (TOW), precision-guided aircraft munitions, artillery and mortar shells, small arms, explosives and secure communications systems.

This is the twentieth USAI package that the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden has allocated. “The United States will continue to work with 50 allies and partners to ensure Ukraine’s brave defenders have the critical capabilities needed to fight Russian aggression,” the Pentagon emphasized.

Before that, the USA provided Ukraine with a $225m military aid package. This happened on 11 July, after Joe Biden met with Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Among other things, the package included Patriot air defense systems.

Biden promised to increase support for Kiev in the last months of his presidential term and to prevent Russian head of state Vladimir Putin from winning the war. The U.S. leader also gave Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and State Department head Anthony Blinken his authority under the Ukraine Support Act.
