The European Commission intends to recommend starting negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU. This was reported by The Financial Times citing three sources familiar with the discussion.
On June 7, the European Commission is going to announce that Ukraine already meets the criteria concerning anti-corruption measures, restrictions on political lobbying, rules for declaring officials’ assets and protection of minority languages.
In this way, the European Commission wants to express its support for Ukraine and is rushing to announce recommendations and start negotiations with Kyiv before the EU presidency passes to Hungary on July 1.
Hungary is expected to oppose the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU, citing in particular the situation with respect for the rights of the Hungarian minority.
The European Commission also recommends to start accession talks with Moldova, but not with Georgia, which recently adopted a law on “foreign agents” that caused protests.
