EU to impose sanctions against Redut PMC

The European Union plans to impose sanctions on the private military company (PMC) Redut until the end of 2023. According to a source of the Real Time newspaper, the draft sanctions list states that Redut is responsible for actions that undermine the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine.

The document names Redut fighters as participants in attempts to liquidate Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Specific details of the assassination attempts are not specified.

Scheme and Sistema journalists found out that Russian military intelligence uses a fictitious private military company Redut to recruit mercenaries to participate in the war in Ukraine. Details of this investigation were presented in a report published in October. Additional details of the investigation were presented on December 1.

In the EU sanctions list, the organization responsible for the operation of the Redut PMC is the Moscow-registered company Redut Security. This company is already on the U.S. sanctions lists. Also on the sanctions list is the deputy head of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces (GRU), Vladimir Alekseev, who, according to journalists, plays a key role in the management of the Redut system.

The journalists note that Redut Security is linked to a certain group of mercenaries, but is not responsible for all the formations calling themselves Redut PMC and participating in military operations in Ukraine.
