More than five thousand denunciations in six months have been collected by the mock Internet application “My Denunciation”, wrote Gazeta.media. The app was designed as a parody, but many of the messages were written seriously.
The My Denunciation app was launched in January 2023 by an IT specialist from Moscow who moved to Europe. It was similar in design to official Russian websites such as Gosuslugi. In the app’s description, users were invited to report observed offenses. By May, more than 10,000 people had already downloaded the app from Google Play, and more than five thousand messages were received. Most of the messages were jokes or condemned denunciations as a phenomenon.
However, about 20% are real denunciations with mentioning personal data of “violators”. Vigilant citizens write about neighbors or coworkers who “spoke ill of the SMO” or “called Putin names”. Many pass on information about those hiding from mobilization or conscription.
The developer of the app promises that the data from the messages will not leak anywhere. He hopes that in this way he will help people who are being denounced by directing the denouncers down the wrong path.
