Saudi Arabia will hold an international meeting on a peaceful settlement in Ukraine in the coming weeks with the participation of representatives of Western and developing countries, the head of the Ukrainian president’s office, Andrii Yermak, has said.
According to him, the talks will discuss Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s peace plan, which includes a demand for the complete withdrawal of Russian troops from the country’s territory.
The meeting, which is designed as a continuation of the talks in Copenhagen held in June, will be held at the level of national security advisers and political advisers of the leaders of the states.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the venue will be the Saudi city of Jida, where representatives of at least 30 countries will arrive. Russian diplomats will not be among them, according to WSJ sources familiar with the preparations for the event. Among those invited, however, are a number of BRICS members, including India, South Africa and Brazil, while China’s participation is in doubt.
“The Ukrainian peace formula contains ten fundamental points, the implementation of which will not only ensure peace for Ukraine, but also create mechanisms to counter future conflicts in the world”, Yermak said. He added that Ukraine thanked Saudi Arabia for its “strong support of Ukrainian initiatives.”
At the same time, Yermak said, Ukraine is beginning to discuss with the United States its security guarantees, which will be in place until its expected NATO membership. Such negotiations will worsen the security situation in Europe, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday, commenting on the situation.
“In fact, they continue the line of dealing with Ukraine’s security issues, in this case to the detriment of our country’s security”, Peskov said. He added that Moscow would closely follow the meeting in Saudi Arabia, although it did not see any prospects for a peaceful resolution of the conflict.
“The Kyiv regime does not and cannot want peace as long as it is being used solely as a tool in the collective West’s war against Russia”, Peskov said.
