A team of Polish doctors has begun a comprehensive medical examination of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said Wednesday. Saakashvili is serving a six-year sentence in 2021 for “abuse of power” during his presidency.
The Georgian court’s verdict was politically motivated, the jailed politician said. Saakashvili’s health has deteriorated during his stay in a Georgian prison. He has repeatedly held hunger strikes in protest.
“We don’t abandon friends in trouble”, Morawiecki wrote on Twitter. – At my request, a group of Polish doctors began a comprehensive medical examination of President Mikheil Saakashvili in Georgia”.
Earlier, Polish authorities suggested that the Georgian government send Saakashvili to Poland for medical treatment. The former Georgian president also asked to be transferred abroad for treatment.
