Army General Valery Gerasimov has been removed from the command of Russian troops in Ukraine, Z-war correspondents reported on July 10, citing the media. At the same time, Gerasimov, 67, will remain the chief of the general staff of the Russian Armed Forces. Colonel-General Maksim Teplinsky, 54, was allegedly appointed commander of the troops in Ukraine.
Teplinsky is the commander of the Airborne Troops (since 2022). He is a Hero of the Russian Federation (1995, Chechen War). As of July 2023, deputy commander of the Joint Group of Russian troops in Ukraine.
It should be noted that such a change is somewhat out of Vladimir Putin’s style. Gerasimov’s replacement was demanded during the quick mutiny by Yevgeny Prigozhin, and Putin does not like to fulfill direct demands.
