St. Petersburg police promptly formed a special department for the protection of the sky, Fontanka.Ru reported on May 12 with reference to the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region.
The special department recruited mainly officers who returned from business trips to the occupied territories of Ukraine.
Among the tasks of the unit are mobile patrols to identify and detain drone operators.
The patrols include shooters armed with sniper rifles and carbines, as well as specialists in the use of technical means to suppress and neutralize drones.
The department was first operational on May 9, it secured the skies over Palace Square and adjacent streets during the parade, as well as over the waters of the Neva River.
Five sniper pairs and two groups with anti-drone electromagnetic guns were on duty.
They worked on the roofs of buildings in the central part of the city. No accidents were recorded.
It should be noted that in St. Petersburg the use of any unmanned aerial vehicles and other flying devices is carried out by obtaining a state service for the use and coordination with the Committee on Transport, as Fontanka.Ru reported in early May. The responsibilities of the Committee on Transport include the coordination of such applications with the law enforcement agencies.
