Lithuania will seek new sanctions against Russia and Belarus because of their intention to deploy nuclear weapons in Belarus, the UNIAN news agency wrote on March 27.
An official statement of the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry reads that the country considers it another attempt of two unpredictable dictatorial regimes to threaten its neighbors and the entire European continent.
“These are desperate moves by Putin and Lukashenko aimed at creating another wave of tension and destabilization in Europe. Such actions further involve Belarus in a war with Ukraine and confrontation with the democratic world,” the report reads.
Let us remind you that on March 25, Vladimir Putin said that a special storage facility for tactical nuclear weapons was being built in Belarus. After this, Ukraine demanded that the UN Security Council convene an extraordinary meeting.
The European Union said that Belarus could stop it if it wanted to, otherwise it might face new sanctions, UNIAN news agency reported. Also Poland, Germany and France reacted to Putin’s statement. Warsaw said that this is a step towards dragging Belarus into the Russian military machine, while Berlin accused the Kremlin of an attempt to “nuclear intimidate” it. Paris called on Russia to act responsibly and revise the agreement with Belarus.
