A peaceful democratic revolution is taking place in Belarus before our eyes. Despite the riot police brutality and atrocities, the Belarusian civil society demonstrates a determination to get rid of the long-term dictatorship and continues to defend its will expressed in the recent presidential election.
In the eyes of the citizens of Belarus and the international community, Lukashenko is no longer a legitimate president and the removal of the Belarusian dictator from his throne is a matter of the near future. At the same time, the further agony of the Lukashenko regime will not only inevitably lead to the continuation of violence against civilians and new human casualties, but also endanger the statehood of Belarus.
We have already witnessed how Putin used the state crisis in Ukraine after the Revolution of Dignity to seize Ukrainian territories and launch military aggression. The “power vacuum” that has arisen in Belarus creates opportunities for the implementation of Putin’s expansionist plans, and today there are more and more signs indicating the existence of a real threat of annexation of Belarus by Russia.
The international crimes of the Putin regime in the post-Soviet space have repeatedly become challenges for the Russian opposition, which it was unable to cope with. In response to Russia’s military invasion of Georgia and Ukraine, as well as the annexation of Crimea, a significant part of the Russian opposition was unable to take a principled position and give an adequate assessment of the actions of the Russian dictator.
Today, when another neighboring country may be under attack, we call on everyone who considers themselves to be part of the Russian opposition to try to prevent the implementation of the Kremlin’s aggressive plans towards Belarus by all possible means. The mafia regime, which has seized power in Russia, stupefied by imperial ambitions, cannot be allowed to write another bloody chapter in the post-Soviet history of our country.
